In keeping with our mission to be an important, internationally recognized platform for contemporary sculpture while educating and inspiring the community of the Florida Keys and its visitors, the Board of Directors continues to expand the exhibition to a variety of venues and special locations in the community. The two main exhibition venues are West Martello Tower and Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. Park employee and sculptor Jim Racchi initiated the exhibition in 1995. Over the years it has grown from a handful of renowned Key West artists to a nationally recognized exhibition showcasing international and word-class artists. Articles and reviews of the exhibition have appeared in such notable publications as Sculpture, Art in America, Art News, The Miami Herald, The Miami Art Guide, Delta Sky (The in-flight magazine for Delta Airlines), and more. Sculpture Key West, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, was formed in 2002 by artists, gallery owners and art lovers in Key West to support the annual exhibition. Sculpture Key West is unique in that its outdoor venue can be seen by land, sea and air. Many artists take advantage of this unique venue to showcase work that can be viewed from a variety of vantage points. Participating artists have included Robert Chambers, Karlis Rekevics, Monika Goetz, Robert Hickman, Luisa Caldwell, Ralph Provisero, Gerhard Fousek, Eliza Proctor, John Petrie, Jack Howard-Potter, Ron Fondaw, Joe Wheaton, Susan Rodgers, John Martini and many more. Jurors include Shamim Momin (2009) co-curator of the 2008 Whitney Biennial; Mary Ceruti (2008), Director of the SculptureCenter in New York; and Glen Gentele (2007), Director of the Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis MO. Sculpture Key West wrapped up another successful sculpture exhibition and announced the award winners for the 2008 show. Karlis Rekevics received the Bob Crane Grand Esplanade Award First Prize with his sculpture Bastion, Affectation, Differences, a large-scale piece made of cast plaster. Second and third prizes for the Bob Crane Grand Esplanade Award went to Kees Ouwens for his piece The Sound of Shadow and to Monika Goetz for The End of the World. The Duke Rood Memorial Award for Artistic Excellence went to Susan Rodgers for My Mondiran and to Ans Hey for Architectual Love. Hey’s piece remains on display at the Florida Keys Community College Library. The People’s Choice Award for Best by Land, sponsored by the Key West Citizen, was awarded to Jimmy Wray’s HS2 Home School High School for the student-made sculpture Alchemy 2 – Dream Catcher. The People’s Choice Award for Best by Sea, sponsored by Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships, went to Lori Nozick for Lighthouses. The Jim Racchi Earth Water Award went to Steven Durow for his cast glass sculpture at the West Martello titled Dasein Columns. Robert Chambers’ sculpture Propane Dog will remain on display at the NOAA weather station on White St.
